Two Men

Recently I attended a visitation and celebration of the lives of two men who have passed and whose contributions to our community were exemplary. Two very different men bound by a commitment and love for Warwick.

Joe Walter was a lifelong resident. His service and passion was to the Warwick Fire Department. Joe was a member of the Raymond Hose Company for 42 years. He was the Commissioner of the Warwick Fire District where he had also been past Chairman.

Welder, machinist by trade, Fireman to his core. Joe exemplified the values and community connection of a volunteer Fireman. He was a role model for others through his commitment even when he faced physical challenges.

Joe’s diagnosis of MS and eventual paralysis never dissuaded him from participation in Company activities. What was clear was the support from his fellow Firemen and women and the respect that they shared. Joes greatest support came from his family and his wife Deb whose commitment to his needs and comfort was a testament of their relationship, her strength and love.

At the ceremony at the Raymond Hose Firehouse, the members bid farewell to their friend and brother. True words and a final call over the notification system were poignant reminders of this dedicated man and his service to our community.

The beginning of my Public Service career began when I was appointed to finish my late  Dad’s term as a Trustee. I was appointed by then-mayor Frank Lacalamita.

I remember that time as I began to learn the value and meaning of being an elected official. Frank was a great role model and showed me the ropes, for example he taught me the value of using State resources such as the New York Counsel of Mayors and elected officials.

Frank was Shop Teacher and Sports Coach and Referee and for that so very generous with his time and knowledge. I learned a great deal and although we didn’t always agree I recognized I was green, and he was seasoned. He held a tight rein on the Village expenses. He was deliberate and careful in his actions and for that I grew to learn the weight of the responsibilities that we shared.

Socially, he and his wife Kate were friends with my parents and like many couples of that era were focused on family and community. They were card players, tennis players and golfers truly enjoying each other’s company and what Warwick had to offer.

As I reflect, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity that Frank gave me which led me to my role as Mayor. Little did I know then what time would reveal.
