NOTICE OF ADOPTION OF LOCAL LAW REGARDING ELECTIONS

NOTICE OF ADOPTION OF LOCAL LAW
SUBJECT TO PERMISSIVE REFERENDUM

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that at a meeting held on January 6, 2020, the Village Board of the Village of Warwick, Orange County, New York, duly adopted a Local Law entitled “A Local Law Altering The Terms Of Office Of The Mayor And Village Trustees So That Elections May Be Held Biennially In Odd-Numbered Years“, an abstract of which follows, which Local Law was adopted subject to a permissive referendum pursuant to Village Law 3-302(7) .

ABSTRACT:The local law alters the terms of office for the Mayor and Village Trustees so that elections for the office of the Mayor and Village Trustees shall be held biennially, in odd-numbered years, in order to synchronize the election of two of the Village Trustees with the odd-year election of the Village Justice.  It accomplishes this by providing that for the 2022 election, the term of office for the candidates elected as Mayor of the Village of Warwick and as two (2) Village Trustees shall be five (5) years and that for the election in 2027 and in elections thereafter, the term of office for the candidates elected as Mayor and two (2) Trustees shall be four (4) years.  Further, it provides that for the 2024 election, the term of office of the two (2) candidates elected as Village Trustees of the Village of Warwick shall be five (5) years and that for the election in 2029 and in elections thereafter, the term of office for the offices of the aforesaid two Village Trustees shall be four (4) years.

Said Local Law shall not take effect until thirty (30) days after the date of its adoption.  Further, the said Local Law shall not take effect unless and until it is approved by an affirmative vote of a majority of the qualified electors of the Village of Warwick voting upon it at referendum if, within thirty (30) days after the adoption of the Local Law, there is filed with the Village Clerk of the Village of Warwick a petition signed and acknowledged, proven or otherwise authenticated by electors of the Village qualified to vote in number equal to at least five percent (5%) of the total vote cast for governor in the Village in the last general election held for the election of State officers, protesting against the said Local Law and requesting that it be submitted to the qualified electors of the Village for a vote of approval or disapproval upon referendum.

A copy of the said Local Law is available for public inspection during normal business hours at the Village Clerk’s Office located at 77 Main Street, Warwick, New York 10990.
