The Fest
We are a day away from the 33rd Applefest! It represents for many the apex of the apple season. This evening is the Harvest Full Moon. So, we are in the mix of harvest, apples, pumpkins, full moons, cider and mums! The sweet coolness of a season beginning – the days shortening and the surprising contrast of light and deep shadows.
The “local” rule for Applefest is to get in early, enjoy and get out! Not to say you can’t spend the entire day having fun and exploring Orange County’s largest festival. I clearly remember the first Applefest. It was advertised as an Antiques Fair. Main Street was closed off, which was where the entire event took place. It was a baptism by weather, Hurricane Hugo came into town that very day. Rain, wind and antiques are a recipe for disaster. The whole affair was wrapped up by 1:00 p.m.
Applefest has evolved over many years and has become the premier festival of its kind. For us locally it is an important economic engine. We entertain thousands of visitors that day and for many, it is an introduction to the Warwick Valley that often results in many return visits. Our not-for-profits can bolster their treasury for the year and thus rely less on local fundraising and donations. It has a positive impact on our local businesses and restaurants. Its ripple effect has increased and consistent tourism energizes the local economy.
Applefest is a Warwick Chamber of Commerce and Warwick Community Center sponsored event. I commend the Applefest Committee for their hard work and commitment. Their work and preparation for next year will begin almost immediately after this Applefest is over! I want to also thank our Superintendent of Public Works, Mike Moser and his team who help set the stage months in advance and leading to the day of. A combination of stage crew, technicians, magicians and MacGyvers! Also, thank you in advance to Chief John Rader and the Warwick Police Department and the Warwick EMS for their planning and preparation to ensure a high level of public safety.

Clearly it takes a Village and then some! It looks like the weather will break and the sun will shine once again on our enduring and always surprising Applefest. See you there!
The next Village Board will take place on October 2, 2023, 7:30 pm, Village Hall, 77 Main Street. Agendas are available online HERE.
