Michael Sweeton
Town of Warwick Supervisor
Retirement Celebration
The following letter was written to Town of Warwick Supervisor, Michael Sweeton, in honor of his retirement celebration on September 10, 2023:
Dear Michael,
On behalf of the Village Board and the residents of the Village of Warwick I would like to present you with a print by our friend the late Robert Fletcher. The print depicts a winter scene circa 1860 of Railroad Avenue and the train station. A scene with activity as vibrant as the Village today! It was the railroad that brought newfound prosperity to the Town and made the Village a hub of commerce and gave reason for it to incorporate.
This is an important moment in our history, but it is mirrored by the work you’ve accomplished as Town Supervisor. It is a legacy that has protected agriculture and open space, created an economic catalyst through innovative development of a former prison, a vision of a town-wide recreational capability of a former camp, an accessible beach in Greenwood Lake and protected lands adjacent to Glenmere Lake. You recognized early on that a strong Town is defined by a close and positive relationship with its Villages and hamlets. It has been through your leadership and care that has made Warwick an example, a model and above all a remarkable place.
I know, working with you for so many years, that beyond the larger projects are the day-to-day decisions and interactions that we face as elected representatives. It is in the daily hands-on work that we truly understand the meaning of service that forms a deep knowledge of our community. Michael, you have exemplified this role.
Your retirement from public service is personally bittersweet. Having been part of the “Two Mikes” for so long, over two decades, it’s hard to let go. Our mutual commitment has been over time a foundation for positive and often creative community development and long-term vision. I am grateful to have shared this time with you as a peer, mentor, and friend.
Well wishes to you, Michael, and on behalf of the Village residents, thank you. This is the close of a chapter but beyond is the unwritten the still unimagined. I know you are a humble man but please take this moment and relish in your accomplishments that have protected our land, prepared us for the future and touched so many lives.
Very truly yours,
Mayor Michael J Newhard
