Juneteenth 2023

From the Mayor’s Office – June 19, 2023

Juneteenth

Today is Juneteenth. We celebrate the final independence from slavery of African Americans. It is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.

The history of today is the delayed freeing of enslaved blacks in Galveston Texas. About 250,000 people remained enslaved for over 2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas was in Confederate control in that period of time.

Our community’s diversity grows. We are proud of the accomplishments and impact of the UAME Church over its 125-year history. The proud African American residents who settled here early on have left us an indelible legacy of families and history.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, and all federal agencies are closed. Although many Village, Town and County offices remain open, we will be reviewing the closure of Village Offices on this day in years to come.

On behalf of the Village Board, I wish all our African American Friends, Neighbors, Residents a Happy and celebratory Freedom Day!
