FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE: Independence!

The Fourth of July lies before us – a long weekend to celebrate our nation’s birthday. It’s maybe a moment to think about America, not that the state of America isn’t always on our minds as we are bombarded by hyper news but more importantly what we are grateful for, why we are proud and what is our vision as Americans?

We celebrate our victory in the war for independence and what a bold step; to release ourselves from colonial bonds and to become our own entity. We achieved our independence to be at the very core independent and free people – it’s a gift, hard won. The Declaration of Independence states, “we hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Powerful promises and often unfulfilled and yet a vision, a plan, a challenge for each generation to not only aspire to but to achieve.

America is imperfect but for myself as an American it is the yearning and hard work to improve that is meaningful, to know we have the ability to right wrongs, the ability to change, to fight for the true meaning of the words set down so long ago, to recognize if followed, would bring us closer to the essence of the dream of equality, freedom and independence no matter what race, religion, gender, age, or sexual orientation.

We will always have some new challenge that tests how evident these truths really are. This is made historically clear by generational and cultural blindness. The important thing is this great experiment continues and through the journey of discovery, finding the true meaning of the words that set the stage.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees I wish all a very happy Independence Day! Have fun, be safe and enjoy what our remarkable Valley has to offer.
