FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE: For the Love of Old Buildings

Even the most casual observer can see a difference in the Village of Warwick and many other places. It is in part due to the collection of historic buildings that are an important part of the fabric of the Village. In 1984 a portion of the Village received designation as a State and Federally recognized Historic District. The district encompasses a large swath, including the downtown business district and connecting neighborhoods. In essence the spine of the Village. In the district are buildings from Colonial America and span to the early 20th century.

It is the preservation of these buildings that truly set us apart and physically make the Village unique. The designation of a Historic District is one thing, but it is the active, involved protection and preservation of these buildings that is key and over time the valuable ingredient that makes a difference. This process is shepherded by our Architectural and Historic District Review Board and bolstered by an active Historical Society but most importantly the support, love and pride of the owners of these historic properties.

The Village is looking into the Certified Local Government Program through the NY State Department of Historic Preservation. Trustee Corey Bachman and volunteer Jack Ellis have been spearheading the effort. The program will strengthen the Board and open up grant possibilities to owners of historic properties.

We are surrounded by history, especially in the Hudson Valley. If you have an interest in local history or community preservation, I urge you to become a member of the Town of Warwick Historical Society – as well as being stewards of significant historic structures they are committed to education and engagement on many levels. For membership applications and more information please go to www.warwickhistory.org. I think you will be impressed and surprised at what they have to offer.
