FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE: The Lesson of Light, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King

In the dark days of winter, we often struggle with the lack of light. It can sometimes challenge us emotionally especially after the activity of the social Holiday Season. But then there is the Winter Solstice, the dividing line between darkness and light. Day by day we see light accumulate as if to slowly, carefully, methodically conquer the prolonged darkness. A yearly phenomenon that is a reminder of the magnitude and forces of change.

When Doctor King said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that” he was speaking in the context of a world view, an ethical stance and a commitment to create social change. Now, 54 years later we celebrate his life and most importantly his dedication to meaningful change, a change of perception of race, class and entitlement.  He ignited that spark that exists to this day and necessarily so. Darkness and hate continue sometimes apparent, often hidden in the cracks and under the surface of comfort and status quo.

I read his words regularly. He remains a role model, a hero. His words are what inspire me and his lifetime of actions, his ability to face challenges are what move me, wake me up, allow me to see more clearly. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in a moment of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenges and controversy.” Dr. King left us all a gift – a moral compass to navigate the choppy waters of misery and hate and to lead us out of darkness.

So, every day there is a bit more light. It is reassuring, this slow but measured reawakening. With light comes warmth, with longer days, productivity, and a sense of accomplishment. The challenge though is not to be lulled by this momentary satisfaction and to remember the darkness we left behind. That is what I’ve learned from Dr. King, a lesson that I carry with me and grow from.
