A Frosting

Waking up to a light frosting of snow puts me in the holiday spirit. Being in a place that’s surrounded by nature makes it even better. The sights and sounds of this time of year are wonderful, a bit of an elixir – the scent of evergreen, the smokey smells of wood stoves – the catch your breath taste of cold fresh air! Downtown the combination of bells and the sound of hooves along Main Street and Railroad Avenue seem to erase time and for a second worries. The windows are lit and displays beckon us into shops. There are very few things that have the magic of a small town at this time of year.

Some very good news. The NYS Department of Transportation will be doing major road improvements on Rte. 94. This will be a two-year project. The scope of the work includes the Village of Florida and the Village and Town of Warwick. In the Village of Warwick, improvements will be in 2023 with a complete repaving from Van Duzer/Maple Ave. to the Village line by the Warwick Cemetery and a large swath of 17A including culvert repairs. Improvements will also encompass upgrading pedestrian crossings throughout, including the intersection of Colonial Ave. and Main St. and new ADA compliant sidewalks along Oakland Ave. The Village initiated a meeting with the NTSDOT to begin a conversation about the challenges we recognize and the important design elements of the project. This project also comprises the much-needed improvements to the intersection of County Rte.1 and Rte. 94 in the Town. As I mentioned, it is a two-year project with improvements beginning in the Village of Florida in 2021. This has been a long time coming and the chorus of squeaky wheels, the two Villages and the Town have been advocating for these improvements for years. As we learn more and as design work becomes finalized, we will update the information to the public. In the meantime, we are sharing with the DOT design team the public responses we’ve received during the Comprehensive Plan outreach.

Santa Claus is coming to Town! Have your child’s photo taken with Santa on his beautiful sled at Railroad Green Park this Saturday Dec.11th. 12:00 – 2:00. Rain date Sunday Dec.12th same time. An activity sponsored by the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Warwick Merchant’s Guild.
