FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE: The Hunter’s Moon

Last night there was a big, bright full moon! The October moon, known as the Full Hunter’s Moon, got its name because it was considered a sign to Native Americans to prepare and store food for the Winter ahead.

I enjoy this time of the year. The apple season has calmed down and we’ve regained our Valley and composure. Every day there is a surprise as our trees change color and the village-scape becomes extraordinary. We too prepare for the next season and enjoy this special place.

The Eve of All Hallows is just before us. My wife recently came across my circa 1960’s skeleton costume. I was four years old, and I remember quite clearly buying it with my mom at Joe Fix Its in Goshen. The childhood anticipation and feeling that I was pretty scary when I had it on – a memory worth keeping.

For all things Halloween in the Village please go to our website or scroll down the Village’s Facebook posts. This month’s Warwick Valley Scene Zine is a one stop shop for Halloween events and information throughout the Valley. There is also a wonderful story written by Veteran Tom Brennan in honor of Veteran’s Day which is November 11th. You can find a copy of the Scene Zine at local shops and cafes.

October is also Fire Prevention Month! Fire Prevention Week was from Oct. 3 – 9 but this important topic is always timely. This year’s theme has been Learn the Sounds of Fire Prevention. For more information visit www.firepreventionweek.org and www.sparky.org. First Assistant Chief Mike Contaxis has been the Community liaison for fire safety and does tremendous outreach. In the lobby of Village Hall is a Fire Department kiosk with free pamphlets and information on Fire Prevention and Safety and thus the sage advice, “be prepared.”

The Warwick Fire Department and Warwick Historical Society have joined forces and planted a new Christmas tree at the corner of the Historical Societies, Lewis Park. The new tree, purchased by the Fire Department, is in a more visible spot and will grow to be as magnificent as the original tree which has become too tall to safely light. The new tree will be lit for the coming Holiday season. Watch for dates and details. Thank you to both organizations for such a generous gift and so we prepare…
