FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE: Voces/Voices

When we imagine or reimagine our ideas of a village, as we are doing through the Comprehensive Master Plan process, arts and culture has been a continual and important thread. It is not only the recognition of art and artists in our communities it is also making sure that the arts have a platform – a voice.

‘An artist’s voice is as distinctive as their fingerprint. It is a unique expression of their creative vision and their way of looking at the world.’

On August 14 through the 31st Wickham Works will present Voces/Voices. This is an outdoor exhibit showcasing area artists and their interpretations of the theme, Finding Your Voice. The work will be on display at Railroad Green, Lewis Park and Pine Island Park. Our parks will become gallery space. There is a broad range of artists represented, eight artists as well as the work of young artists in Wickham Works Summer Arts Program – the Dulce Esperanza enrichment program run by the Warwick Area Farmworkers Organization and the Student Youth Academy at the Warwick Community Center.

There will be two public opening events: Saturday, August 14th Art Walk and Reception beginning at Railroad Green and leading to Lewis Park. A reception sponsored by the Warwick Historical Society will follow. On Sunday, August 15th from 12-4 pm Art Fiesta! Join Wickham Works and the Warwick Area Farmworkers Organizations at Pine Island Park, Kay Drive, Pine Island for traditional home cooked Mexican food, music and a celebration of the arts and artists.

This is the strength of our community – when we see the opportunities of a public space and explore the possibilities. In this remarkable undertaking it not only gives voice to individual artist but speaks in a clear voice what is important to us and makes us unique.
