Village of Warwick Receives Safety Award

The Village of Warwick received the New York Municipal Reciprocal’s Risk Management Award for 2018. The award is given to a village or city in recognition to their commitment to sound risk management and to safety training effort that can and does make a difference.

The Village of Warwick was chosen because it is a village that incorporates safety and risk management into its operations at all levels and has created a culture of safety. Examples abound. One essential ingredient has been an active Safety Committee formed about three years ago. Its efforts have gained needed Board support to invest in a host of recommendations which have had a great influence on DPW workers and others toward safety awareness. New safety equipment, more frequent tailgate talks, and tighter oversight have yielded positive results.

Importantly, all elected officials and boards are included in required trainings on subjects such as harassment and workplace violence prevention. Trustee Bill Lindberg coordinates that effort and documents the topics and attendance.

The Village of Warwick has seen a steady record of reducing its losses – a loss ration now under 50% since joining NYMIR in 2002.

The New York Municipal Reciprocal’s Risk Management Award for 2018 was presented to Mayor Newhard at the Annual Meeting of the NYS Conference of Mayors on May 6, 2018.
