FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE – Address Read at the Hispanic Celebration on September 24, 2017 Buenos Días, Vecino y Amigos Bienvenida

This year the Village of Warwick is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. Part of the celebration is the burying of a time capsule with letters for the future. The time capsule will be buried this year and re-opened in 2067. I would like to read a letter I’ve written to the Hispanic Community that will be part of our community’s message to the next generation:

To our Hispanic Friends and Neighbors,

This letter marks the day of our annual celebration of Hispanic Culture. September 24th, 2017, Pastor Rolfi Elivo and his committee have organized a special evening including a parade on Main Street and activities at Railroad Green. This is an event we now have every year and that the community looks forward to. It is truly a celebration and representation of the many Hispanic cultures and is part of our growing diversity.

In 2017 there have been tremendous challenges – Hurricanes have devastated the Caribbean, Florida, and Texas. Intense earthquakes have destroyed parts of Mexico. In the United States political unrest has left us unsettled. These I believe are tests of our resilience and strength.

Today though, I urge us to think of the theme of this year’s celebration which is “Peace”. To find Peace starts with a decision and once it’s decided, it takes work. In Warwick this has long been our goal and hopefully the reader of this letter in fifty years will see the results of a decision made so many years ago – a decision that we believe holds promise and a dream.

As part of the 150th Anniversary we appointed a Kid Mayor. Danny Alquezada Madero represents in my eyes, the dream we speak of. It is not only that he is Mexican American; it is also that he is a young boy who believes in kindness, fairness and the desire to achieve peace.

From the destructive storms, natural disasters and political upheaval we will emerge to be stronger. In Warwick we will continue to follow our hearts – to respect and love our neighbors and in each one of us, find the essence of the humanity we share.

Paz á vosotros,

Mayor Michael Newhard
