This Wednesday, June 28th at 7:00 p.m., The New York Wind Symphony will be performing a very special concert on Railroad Green. The concert is in honor of the Village’s Sesquicentennial and will be offering up music that relates in some way to the period of time that the Village was incorporated in 1867. One of the pieces, a Lincoln Portrait, by composer Aaron Copeland is a classic. It is a beautiful arrangement – haunting, playful and dramatic. Instead of sung lyrics it calls for a narration of spoken words and I’ve been asked to perform that part. The words are powerful because they are mostly Lincoln’s own words.
“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present.
The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the
occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.
We must disenthrall ourselves and then we shall save our country.”
In my mind this is the essence of the struggle of democracy. It is one that every generation has fought for, argued for and held fast. Our principles are ideals and to that end vulnerable. So whether the fight is about freedom from sovereign rule, slavery, civil rights or human rights they all are part of the quest that continues to make America great.
I’m honored to repeat these words in tandem with the remarkable music of Aaron Copeland. So I invite you and your family to enjoy an evening of music that celebrates the Queen Village – forever young, resourceful, resilient and beautiful.
Of the hundreds of graduates of Warwick High School Class of 2017 there was one that stood out. After over 70 years Rocco Garcia received his diploma. Many young men were enlisted in the service before they finished high school. When they returned, job opportunities were more of a priority than to return to school. Rocco was a great athlete and he shared the basketball court with my dad, Bob Newhard who played for Highland Falls High School. My dad had a similar experience but was able to finish his schooling to go on to become a pharmacist. Congratulations Rocco and thank you to the administration of Warwick Valley High School that recognized his accomplishments and achievements that go well beyond a high school diploma. This is why we live here!
See you at the Family Fun Fest on Tuesday, July 4th! Events start at the Warwick Valley Community Center at 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Bike Parade and Pageant line up is at Railroad Green at 10:00 a.m. and will go to the Community Center at 10:45 a.m. Prizes for best decorated in categories.
