FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE

A Gift to be Simple

During winter’s dormancy we often forget the power of nature (except a good winter storm!) and now it’s spring and we see how much of life slumbers and when it awakens it is simply a tour de force!

This past Sunday a Maypole was erected on the Green in Lewis Park directly across from Village Hall for a traditional Maypole Dance. The pole was some 20 feet tall festooned with bright ribbons and topped by a cedar sapling. This was a gift from the Bruderhof Community who gave instructions on how to do the simple dance which involved the twinning of colorful ribbons and the untwining as well. Amidst the May clouds and green lushness folks danced to the lively music, a dance that seemed as old as time. After the dance we all walked to the Old School Meeting House for a special service. Spiritual Leaders joined together for an Ecumenical Service to honor the Village’s 150th Anniversary of incorporation. The Meeting House is an historic structure maintained lovingly by the Warwick Historical Society. Built on a knoll in the center of the Village its steeple rises up and is visible from all corners of the Valley. It is a beacon punctuating the Village in the verdant landscape of rolling farmland. Its presence is a reminder of the spiritual conviction of early settlers and our own sense of belonging to a place or something bigger than ourselves.

Together in the solemnity of old timbers, in the brightness of a spring evening, we raised our voices in song, prayer and ancient scripture and found by chance the essence of community – of communion. With Priests, Pastors, and Rabbis as our guide and with song in our hearts, the dormancy of winter, its void, was filled with the joy of a simple gift.

Thank you to all the Clergy who made this event possible, and special thanks to Pastor Michael Otte who planned the service and gave the sermon. Thank you to the Bruderhof Community for their participation and thank you to all the various choirs and the Jubilate choir under the direction of David Crone for a memorable, special evening.

This coming Sunday, May 14th is Mother’s Day. To all our Moms wishing you a wonderful day!

The next Village Board meeting is Monday, May 15th at 7:30pm in Village Hall.
