The music of Beatle, George Harrison, filled the air on Railroad Green this past Saturday night. The band made up of local musicians played to one of the largest crowds gathered for the final concert of the season. George Harrison would have been seventy-five this year and the evening was a celebration of his musical creativity as a Beatle and solo performer. The evening ended with his iconic piece “My Sweet Lord” that included our very own Warwick Valley Chorale to sing the chorus. A beautiful and special evening! Thank you to Music Meister, Bill Iruato, for all his work making the summer concert series possible.
On Sunday hundreds of friends and neighbors came out for the annual Hispanic Culture Celebration. Besides music, dancing, and food there was a presentation of honors. This year Israel Mercado and Diego Sanchez were honored for their work with the Hispanic Ministry at the Reformed Church. There were also honors given to Theresa Mack, Liz Houlton, Jim Neujahr and Mimi Fader who are active in the Hispanic community through WIN, Warwick Immigrant Neighbors. I was pleased to help honor Mary Collura who has been a wonderful friend and advocate to the families in her neighborhood and beyond – breaking down language and cultural barrier with humanity and friendship. With the addition of Los Chinelos dancers from Mexico, traditional music, and delicious food from many Hispanic countries it was a true celebration of Hispanic culture.
Coming up on Railroad Green on Saturday, October 6th will be the annual Children’s Book Festival. This is an event that brings some seventy children and young adult authors and illustrators to our doorsteps. This is an opportunity to meet the men and women who create magic through literature. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is sponsored by the Albert Wisner Library and Susan and Glenn Dickes.
We are so lucky to have Railroad Green. It has over time become our small but meaningful epicenter of culture and events. This of course would not be possible if not for the Village’s Public Works Department who maintain the park and set up for activities. It is also the joyful and beautiful place it is because of the many, many hours and horticultural knowledge of the Warwick Valley Gardeners.
Fall is a wonderful and busy time throughout our valley and villages. It is the local events that fill our lives with a sense of belonging and pride.
The next Village Board meeting will take place Monday, October 1, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 77 Main Street.
