FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE – A Time to Remember

This past weekend many memories were made. On Saturday, October 14th, Railroad Avenue was filled with ambulances, fire trucks – new and old, dump trucks, a tool CAT truck, and police vehicles. On hand were the many men and women and their families who are part of our first responder team. The highlights of the event included demonstrations by the Police Department K9 Unit, fire safety demonstration, Stop the Bleeding demonstration, a child car seat safety check and the Fire Department History Committee display. This was a moment of celebration of these vital community activities and appreciation of the commitment of the men and women who perform them. A cake with each group’s insignia was presented as well as appreciation plaques from the Sesquicentennial Committee. To see the fun that kids and their parents were having made this a great event. Thank you to Frank’s Pizza for their generous donation of pizza to feed the masses! Thank you as well to all the men and women from each organization that made the day such a success.

Later in the day an excited crowd met at the entrance of Memorial Park to bury the 2017 time capsule, which will be dug up in 2067; the Bicentennial of the Village! The newly appointed Bicentennial Committee Trustees to be part of the 2067 dig were on hand. Many, many photos were taken and each child had the opportunity to shovel a bit of dirt to help bury the capsule! Once the capsule is buried a new marker stone will be put in place. This marker was generously donated by the Garcia Family, owner of Miller Monuments. Thank you Claire for such a wonderful gift! Also, thanks to George Arnott, Eileen Patterson, Time Capsule Committee members for their hard work and the Warwick Valley Rotary who donated the capsule.

So onward to the rest of the Sesquicentennial year – still more to come and finishing with “Apple Eve” and yet another time capsule filled with the documentation of the entire year. This capsule was given to us by local architect, Dave Brandt and will be the first to be dug up in 2067 and will convey all the fun we had in 2017!

Thank you to the Sesquicentennial Committee members and especially Mary Collura, Creative Director and Bill Lindberg, Village Trustee, who have been the driving force, making this all possible and a time to remember!
